Bella Quilted Coat Workshop - October 2026

Build your confidence in garment-making while creating a standout piece in this three-part workshop featuring the Bella Quilted Coat pattern by ByAnnie.

** The workshop is designed to create a quilted jacket Toile to ensure correct fit and give you the skills to go home and make the finished coat. You will not make the actual finished coat in this workshop but if you need more help, further workshops will be available for the foundation paper piecing.**

This friendly lesson series will guide learners through planning, fitting and making a quilted garment at a comfortable pace. Learners will have time to talk through fabric choices, measurements and preparation before moving on to practical sewing skills such as making a toile, setting up the sewing machine, quilting, binding, fitting, pockets, linings, cuffs, hoods, plackets, open-ended zips and alternative fastenings.

The Bella Coat combines quilting and garment sewing into a modern, wearable design. Its relaxed fit, full lining, set-in sleeves, inseam pockets and zip-front closure balance style and practicality while showcasing your fabric choices.

Across one Zoom class and two practical workshops, we’ll guide you from planning and preparation to construction and finishing your toile, helping you complete a quilted toile coat and build confidence for your next project.

Class Structure – What you will learn

Session 1 – Zoom meeting: Friday 2nd October, 7.00 pm

Topics include:

☐ Fabric choices: ready-made quilted fabric or quilt front, wadding and backing
☐ Taking measurements and choosing the correct size
☐ Copying the pattern onto tracing paper
☐ Preparing and fitting a toile
☐ Setting up the sewing machine and choosing the correct feet
☐ Selecting stitch length and tacking the garment together
☐ Adjusting the fit and resewing neatly
☐ Binding edges and finishing seams
☐ Pockets: side, patch, inserted and bagged-out pockets
☐ Cuffs, hoods, linings and plackets
☐ Open-ended zips and alternative fastenings
☐ Paper piecing discussion

Everyone will have the opportunity to attend and ask any questions before the practical sessions begin.

In class, we'll discuss whether students prefer ready-made options. We'll also cover how to quilt fabric or create a quilted piece using a quilt front, wadding and backing. This will help everyone prepare the correct materials before starting their garment.

Session 2 – & 3 Saturday, 31st October Full Day + Sunday 1st November ½ Day

Once the class has the information and decisions to be made regarding ref sizes, etc., we will then move on to practical slots

The class will cover key construction techniques, including making a toile, adjusting the fit, tacking the garment, and resewing once the fit is correct. We will also cover machine set-up, stitch length, and how to build confidence at each stage of construction.

Finishing details will include binding, pocket options, cuffs, hoods, linings, plackets, open-ended zips and alternatives such as press studs, denim buttons, buttonholes or covered buttons. By the end of the class, students should understand how to bring the garment together neatly and choose the best finish for their project.

Skill Level

Confident Beginner to Intermediate

You should be comfortable with:

Accurate cutting and seam allowance
Basic quilting and/or piecing
Using your sewing machine independently

Bella Coat Pattern, 50” Separating Zip, 2 yards of Pattern Ease, Fabric for the coat based on size, 1 package of twin-sized batting, Rotary cutter, Scissors, Thread, and Sewing Machine
